Is it possible for one to believe that this smooth, curvy, flowing, modern shape dates all the way back to 2004? That’s 23 years ago. Let that sink in. I’m referring to the DB9 Series I. The original. The true revolution. Or was it an evolution? After all, Ian Callum’s masterpiece, the DB7 precedes it, and that was and still is considered by many as one of the most beautiful cars in the world. And the DB7 was the first one to bring Aston Martin into this era of design style, officially becoming its bestseller, and saving the mark from being just a page in the books of history that doesn’t continue.
They say, either be the first or be the best. So where does the DB9 come into play? After all, its theoretically under the glory of the DB7. While the DB7 is stunningly timeless in a blend of classic and modern, I feel the DB9 is what truly caught the essence, by being timeless in just a modern way. A way that looks forward. A way that has no time to look behind.
Watch the DB9. Watch the smoothness of the design just blend into the atmosphere as it flows past you, doing well over 300 kilometres an hour, with the symphony of the twelve cylinders, hypnotising the ears.
Stepping inside, the ambience of a gentleman’s club awaits you with acres and acres of colour and character. Insert the crystal key into the centre of the dashboard, press and hold it. The V12 roars to life, always ready for anything, and more.
The shape of the dashboard, the shape of the air conditioning vents, the use of piano black veneer, and of course, the six speed manual transmission all work together to give you an experience to remember. The automatic provides beautifully milled aluminium paddle shifters for sporting luxury. And the crystal buttons on the dashboard to select between Park, Reverse, Netural & Drive, with one of the most beautiful automotive keys, cozily nestling in the centre between them.
Being a two door coupe, the DB9 is reminiscent of classics like the DB4, DB5 & DB6. But in the aforementioned modern way. It truly is an automobile of the times.
But at the end of the day, this was built to be one thing. A Grand Tourer. A Gran Turismo. Super comfortable and luxurious, the ability to blast one across continents at speeds most would shy away from, and an absolute treat to the eyes and the ears. It truly is a timeless legend.
