Maserati, oh Maserati. They just do things so right in so many ways. While the name ‘Quattroporte’ simply means “Four Doors” in Italian, there’s a lot more to this beautiful piece of sculpture than just that.
Have you seen a Quattroporte in real life? The occasions I recall most accurately included the time a Champagne coloured Quattroporte glistening in the afternoon sunset glided past a much younger me enjoying my day, cycling. The other occasion starred a Quattroporte in a blue so dark and deep my eyes could get lost, admiring. This was right next to my home, a true treat for me.
Pictures do this design no justice. She blends, yet stands out for the eye that cares to give another glance. This is a large car, yet stays sophisticated. They say she is comfortable. They say she is fast too. Really fast. And she has a voice to match.
Speaking of which, the voice, or should I say, the music, is an art Maserati has almost perfected. Maserati’s V6 engines all have this characteristic creamy note with an emotional harmony as its pushed. The V8 engines though, they are unbelievable. It is not the American roar or a quintessential Ferrari snarl. Instead, its this low pitched, yet a smooth as butter burble that is so pleasing to the ears.
But where does the Quattroporte stand? Where does her identity lie? In other words, who is she? Its quite simple really. This is the quintessential Italian Gran Turismo. A Grand Tourer. A GT. A comfortable express meant to cover continents in speed. A sporty drive, lots of fun times, what’s there not to love?
My appreciation for the design travels towards the interior as well. There are all the amenities you could want. The combination of choice wooden veneers with chrome, and a lovely clock in the middle makes the atmosphere truly luxurious.
The design truly is timeless. This is a quality very few cars that are still made, have.
And the V8 is capable of taking you well over 300 km/h. Anything more to be said? I don’t think so.
But what about the history? Maserati’s flagship ‘Four Door’ has been built since 1963, spanning six generations in total, designed by Italy’s leading designers and coachbuilders such as Pietro Frua, Marcello Gandini from Bertone, Giorgetto Giugiaro from Italdesign, Ken Okuyama from Pininfarina and finally by Lorenzo Ramaciotti from Maserati Centro Stile, FCA. And may this list be ever expanding!
Congratulations, Maserati!
