MV Agusta – The Resurrection Of A Legend | Flamboyance GT

Meccanica Verghera Agusta. That name is an Italian legend. It was founded by a Royal Italian Family with a passion for motorbikes and racing. It was the brainchild of Count Vincent and Domenico Agusta. Funded by an aviation company founded back in the 20s by Count Giovanni Agusta, MV Agusta was founded by an ambitious plan. A need for affordable transportation in post war Italy.

The bikes MV Agusta created were modified and were famous all over Italy for being competitive on the track. This started a history of racing for the MV Agusta brand. But all good things in life inevitably come to an end. It did, with the death of Count Domenico in 1971.

MV underwent a downward spiral . The brand was ceasing production facing heavy losses and low demand. And by 1980, the MV Augusta brand, famous for their passion for bikes, was officially dead.

But there has to be a faint source of light towards the end of a tunnel, shouldn’t it? MV Agusta was bought by another wealthy Italian family. Father and son, Claudio and Giovanni Castiglioni over at Cagiva bought the rights to the brand and went on to resurrect it, with the wish and desire for bringing MV Agusta back to its former glory.

The 90s were a great time for passionate motorcycle enthusiasts, with the unveiling of many Italian and Japanese motoring legends. By 1998, MV Augusta was back with their new flagship battle rocket, the F4.

Few bikes could match the amazing reaction the F4 garnered when the veil was pulled off with Mr. Castiglioni and its designer, Mr. Massimo Tamburini proudly standing by and celebrating their hard work. The late Mr. Tamburini is one the world’s finest motorcycle designers and the legendary Ducati 916 was penned by him.

MV Agusta also has a naked back to basics bike. They call it the Brutale. And recently, they have also released the 3 cylinder F3.

But let us not ignore the most interesting part of this entire journey. Mr. Claudio Castiglioni sold MV Agusta to Harley Davidson in 2008 because he felt that it would prosper more in their hands as opposed to his own since there were a few financial difficulties. But just 2 years later, the brand he had resurrected had come back into his own hands and they were in a better financial position as well. What’s more is that now, Mercedes-Benz AMG owns a 25% stake in MV Agusta, so they have some German assistance as well. But what I want to highlight here is that MV Agusta is back into the loving arms of the Castiglioni family, with Mr. Giovanni Castiglioni the new Ceo post the death of his father, Claudio. He has announced that the F4 is getting replaced soon and there are many exciting projects in the future to come.

What is the takeaway from this? If you truly love something, let it go and let it be free. If it finds it’s way back to you, it’s just meant to be. I can’t end this story without tipping my hats off to Mr. Claudio Castiglioni. You sir, are a true legend and will be forever remembered. And congratulations and best wishes to you for the present and the future, Mr. Giovanni.

Thank you for the time spent reading as well!
